What is Laparoscopic Surgery ?

Laparoscopy surgery is a type of modern surgery that uses smaller cuts than you might expect. It is a procedure used to examine the organs of the abdominal and pelvic cavities and treat conditions using minimally invasive surgery. It is also widely called keyhole surgery.

The process derives its name from the laparoscope, a slender tool that has a tiny video camera and light at the end. When a surgeon inserts it through a tiny cut, they can look at a screen and see what is happening inside you. Without those tools, they’d have to make a much larger opening.

Advantage of Laparoscopic Surgery

The advantage of laparoscopy is that it allows a direct view of the abdominal organs and structures without the need for major surgery. It also allows surgical procedures to be performed using small incisions. Gynecologic laparoscopy may be used to treat fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and other conditions. Many surgical procedures that required major surgery in the past can be done through laparoscopy now.

Many surgical procedures can be done using this approach, therefore all laparoscopies are not the same. Because procedures, as well as individuals, are all different, peoples experiences will vary.  Most people will plan to take two weeks off from work after laparoscopy.

Patients who undergo simple diagnostic laparoscopy may feel ready to return to work after one week while patients who’ve had a hysterectomy may require the full two weeks or more. In either case, patients often experience some increase in discomfort and fatigue when they return to their full schedule. You should plan time to rest with this in mind.

Types of Laparoscopic Surgeries :

Many types of surgeries now involve this method. The most common types of laparoscopic surgeries done are the removal of the gallbladder, appendix and hernia repair. Doctors are now using this minimally invasive technology for the removal of the spleen, kidney, colon, uterus, ovaries and prostate glands. The surgeries that are done laparoscopically include:

  • Colectomy: It is performed to remove parts of a diseased colon.
  • Cancer surgery: To destroy a tumor, etc.
  • Adrenalectomy: Performed to remove either or both adrenal glands.
  • Anti-reflux surgery: This is also called hiatal hernia repair. It is done to relieve gastroesophageal reflux disease.
  • Endovascular surgery: It is performed to repair an aneurysm.
  • Cholecystectomy: It is a gallbladder surgery to remove gallstones that cause pain.
  • Gastroenterologic surgery: It includes gastric bypass.
  • Nephrectomy: Performed to remove the kidney.
  • Splenectomy: It is done to remove the spleen.
  • Gynecologic surgery: It includes ovarian cyst removal, hysterectomy, and tubal ligation.
    • Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery
    • Kidney transplant.
    • Heart surgery.
    • Orthopedic surgery.
    • Thoracic surgery.
  • Urologic surgery.
  • Laparoscopic Esophageal Surgery.

Is a laparoscopy a major surgery ?

It is one of the most asked questions when it comes to laparoscopic surgeries. But in order to get an answer to that question, it is essential to understand the basic criterion behind categorizing a surgery into major or minor surgery. Any invasive operative procedure which involves a much extensive resection or a surgery which involves risk to the life of the patient. Any surgical operation that deals with the removal of organs or an alteration in the normal anatomy or entering a body cavity is generally a major surgery.

When it comes to Laparoscopy, it is a type of procedure that allows a surgery without making any large incisions into the skin and access to the pelvis or abdomen and operates on the interior easily. As laparoscopy uses a minimally invasive technique which doesn’t seem to have many risks involved for the patient and which can be performed easily under the influence of general anesthesia, it is not major surgery. Though it requires an expert to perform the surgery and has its own procedures, it doesn’t involve higher risks or higher levels of invasion and thus stands among the minor surgeries.
